TRAVEL
POSTERS

The following is a series of posters modeled after vintage travel memorabilia. They highlight nine specific locations across the world which carry personal significance to me, my family, and my friends. The idea is to shine the same kind of light on small towns and provinces that is typically shone on big cities like New York, Paris, etc.

DINGLE
Dingle is a small town in western Ireland which serves as the starting point for driving tours of the Dingle Peninsula. The rugged coastline features cliffs which drop straight down into the bright blue ocean, and the hillsides are dotted with only a handful of sheep farmer's homes. This poster is a composition of two photos, one of the westernmost point in all of Ireland out on the Dingle peninsula, and another showing some of the storefronts in Dingle town. It's meant to be vibrant and fun while also demonstrating the picturesque qualities of both the natural and manmade sides of Dingle, Ireland.
SANTA CRUZ DE LA CANADA
Santa Cruz is a small town in northern New Mexico which typically has a population around 500. My great grandmother grew up going to the Holy Cross Church with her sisters and therefore asked to have her funeral service held there. This poster aims to highlight the dramatic entrance walkway down to the front door of the church and the beauty in the simplicity of the desert color palette.

SLIDELL, LA
The bayous of Louisiana are unlike any other place in the United States, let alone the world. When I visited Slidell as a teenager I was blown away by how picturesque and biodiverse they are, and the memories I made on a Cajun Encounters tour boat continue to be some of my favorite conversation points. It is evident from its remoteness that the bayou is one of the few natural places left that humans have not conquered so the idea for this poster was to capture the enduring wildness of this unique biome.

BRUGGE

In complete contrast to my previous poster, this one for Bruges highlights human innovation. This small Belgian town is famous for its high concentration of well-preserved medieval architecture and for demonstrating the ways humans harnessed the power of the Dijver Canal to establish important trade routes across northern Belgium. This poster is based on a photograph I took while on a riverboat tour of the canal and features the iconic Brugge flag which can be seen flying on nearly every storefront in the town.

WITH LOVE FROM OHIO
Taken from the driveway of my second cousin's house on our family farm, the photograph that this poster is inspired by encapsulates a vital piece of my family's history, the Yellow Springs Friends' Quaker meeting house, as well as the vastness of the small village of South Charleston. I wanted to capture the peacefulness that the miles of green crops and forests create around the meeting house, which is the focal point of the composition. The cemetery behind the house is the final resting place for many of my ancestors and the surrounding environment clearly plays an important role in maintaining its restfulness.

BURFORD, UK

Nicknamed the “gateway to the Cotswolds,” Burford is a small village just west of Oxford characterized by its iconic hilly main street which provides vista points for the rolling hills of the English countryside. The muted tones of the sky and natural landscape reflect a typical British summer day and mirror the Earthy and humble feel of the medieval building facades. The goal for this poster is to create a feeling of calmness and show how standing from a specific viewpoint can make a busy, crowded main street feel frozen in time.

MATSUMOTO CITY

Matsumoto is a city in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, which my mom visited during her high school exchange program. She says that specifically seeing Matsumoto Castle, depicted in this travel poster, inspired her to return and live in Japan years later. This poster emulates traditional Japanese woodcut prints by balancing high levels of detail with negative space and including a red "signature" stamp in the upper left corner.
LAHAINA, MAUI
In August of 2023 the oceanside town of Lahaina in West Maui was almost completely destroyed by a wildfire. I have spent many summers walking up and down Front Street popping in and out of the art galleries, print shops, restaurants, and shave ice stands that once lined the shore. This poster freezes Lahaina in a time long before the fire, on a hot and sunny summer day when the Pioneer Inn still stood next to the 150 year old banyan tree and people still left their shoes on the dock before getting on their sailboats for a sunset cruise.
